Summary: | David M. Buss, a renowned evolutionary psychologist, and professor at the University of Michigan, has made significant contributions to the field of evolutionary psychology. In his seminal work, Buss explained the need and background that gave rise to the new discipline, highlighting its potential to overcome the limitations of arbitrary personality theories by applying evolutionary principles to the study of human nature (1991). According to David Funder’s book The Personality Puzzle (2019), Buss’ ideas challenged the prevailing thoughts in psychology at the time, which emphasized the need to follow the physics model for scientific rigor and precision. However, Buss argued that physics provides an inadequate model for psychology because it does not solely govern the outcomes of organic life. Instead, Buss proposed that the combination of environmental and organic inputs plays a causal role in activating the mechanisms that reside within individuals and can be observed and studied (Buss, 1991; Cosmides & Tooby, 1987). |
