Keywords:Down Syndrome, Trisomy 21, Psychology, Program Evaluation
Summary:The issue that will be examined in this program evaluation is that of Down syndrome, a
genetic disease that is the result of an extra copy of Chromosome 21 being inherited by the
individual (Akhtar & Bokhari, 2021). It is found that the presence of all or part of the third copy
of chromosome 21 is the most common live born aneuploidy in a human chromosomal structure
that causes this syndrome (Akhtar & Bokhari, 2021; Gardiner et al., 2010; Holmes, 2014).
Symptoms associated with the syndrome include mental disability, distinctive facial
characteristics, and increased risk for heart defects and digestive problems, ranging from mild to
severe (NIH, n.d). The risk of having a child with Down syndrome rises with the mother’s age at
the time of conception. (Guttmacher, n.d).
