Summary:Individuals with Down syndrome, a genetic disorder that is caused by an extra copy in some or all of the cells of chromosome 21 due to nondisjunction during cell division, are prevalent within our education system. While previous theories have correlated DS with advanced maternal age (Yoon et al., 1996), now studies have shown that maternity does not play a significant role. DS is the most common chromosomal abnormality in humans and the leading cause of mild to moderate learning disabilities (Felix et al., 2017).

Approximately 1 in 1000 live births worldwide result in DS (Weijerman & De Winter, 2010). Those with Down syndrome find it harder to learn in a typical way, when given appropriate classroom environments and instruction from the teacher, improvements can be seen. While there are slower learning capabilities for those with down syndrome due to neurological capabilities, when given the appropriate attention, improvements within the realms of sensory input and overall performance will be improved. The vast switch to online learning has provided an additional hurdle that must be overcome for those born with Down syndrome and other mental impairments.
